Solar Water Heating System
The benefits of installing a solar water heating system in your home/business/institution are quite significant especially in the long term. As a matter of fact, in Africa where there is abundant sunshine, 70% – 90% of water heating costs can be saved by installing a solar water heater. Solar water heating systems too are eco friendly since they avoid the harmful greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity production.
Research has shown that in a span of 20-years, a solar water heater can avoid more than 50 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. The water heating system if properly maintained can last between 25-30 years and its pay-back period ranges between 3-4years. The long term benefits will also manifest in reduced dependence on oil and other fossil fuels.
We apparently use direct or direct systems or else open or closed systems. An open system, also referred to as “direct” circulates the potable water through the collector. A closed system (“indirect”) circulates a mixture of water and glycol through the collector and then transfers the heat to the potable water through a heat exchanger. A drain-back system allows water from the collector to drain back into a small tank to prevent water from freezing in the collector
